Party On Washington

Houston's Party Street

Midnight Cool – H Town Bar and Gill

5111 Washington Ave
Houston, TX 77007
(713) 868-1005

One of the coolest new places to hang once Washington Avenue gets overwhelmed, at midnight on weekends for, is H Town Grill.

It sits smack across the street from such venerable standards as: Taps: House of Beers, Brixx, and Ei8ht. As the patrons stack up in long lines to get into the bars and clubs – only to then have to wade to the bar itself, which is at capacity – enjoy a cold beverage at H Town and watch the action. You can get served almost immediately. Windows face Washington Avenue. Cops are camped out in the middle of the street, traffic is at about stand-still, fragrant, well-dressed women are still descending at an impossible rate, the crowd fills up the entire sidewalk across the street, and you have a front row seat.

As quaint and boxy little structures go, the food is terrific. The Reuben and Pastrami sandwiches are off the charts, and relatively cheap to boot. Mahi tacos, shrimp kabobs, and burgers are also very good. H Town opens at 4p, so don’t try to hit it at lunch. Parking is non-existent, but you knew that about Washington. Come late for one of the best live shows in Houston: Washington Avenue in full swing.

Now here’s a strange aside: Julianna, the sultry, dark-skinned bartender mentioned that she was born on 9-11. After further questioning – turns out she worked in the Twin Towers, and was only absent on 9-11 due to a night of dedicated and enthusiastic drinking. You find these things out through questions –always the questions.
